1:31Now PlayingA bipartisan group of senators and the White House reached a tentative agreement on a roughly half-trillion-dollar infrastructure package, a significant breakthrough in the drive to muscle through Congress a massive infusion of spending for roads, bridges and other critical projects.
The agreement clears the way for a Senate vote as soon as Wednesday night that will begin floor consideration of the massive plan. Details weren’t immediately available, but Ohio Senator Rob Portman, the top GOP negotiator, and Virginia Democratic Senator Mark Warner, another member of the group, said the total package represents $550 billion in new spending.
“We now have an agreement on the major issues,” Portman said after briefing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on the deal.
Arizona Democratic Senator Kyrsten Sinema, the lead Democratic negotiator, said President Joe Biden also supports the agreement.
“We’ve got most of the text done so we’ll be releasing it and then we’ll update it as we get those last pieces finalized,” Sinema said. “We do expect to move forward this evening.”
