0:58Now PlayingPresident Joe Biden asked the Centers for the Disease Control and Prevention to consider another extension of an evictions moratorium, but the agency’s leaders haven’t been able to legally justify it, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said.
Biden made the request Sunday, after a ban on evictions the CDC imposed during the pandemic expired the day before.
The president has been criticized by liberals in his own party for waiting until two days before the moratorium’s expiration to ask Congress for an extension, and several progressive lawmakers held a protest outside the Capitol over the weekend after the House adjourned for its summer recess without passing legislation to extend the ban.
Biden asked the CDC to consider a new, 30-day moratorium focused on counties with high or substantial spread of coronavirus, Psaki said Monday in a statement.
“To date, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky and her team have been unable to find legal authority for a new, targeted eviction moratorium,” she said. “Our team is redoubling efforts to identify all available legal authorities to provide necessary protections.”
