1:15Now PlayingThe wandering herd of wild Asian elephants in southwest China's Yunnan Province were eating sugar canes to quench thirst and hid in bushes to cool off on their way home amid hot and dry weather.
Moving northward through the dry and hot Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, the elephants have found the weather was getting hotter and dry, with rare water sources.
Surveillance camera monitoring the wandering herd shows the thirsty elephants foraging in a sugarcane field and eating the cane seedlings to quench their thirst.
"We grow sugarcane, corn and dragon fruit. But no one bothered about the elephants eating their crops. Some villages complained about the losses. But I told them that the government will give them compensation," said Zhang Wanbao, an official of the Shiyantou Village, Shiping County.
After quenching their thirst, the elephants returned to the woods to cool off.
"A male elephant was lying on the ground and others were trying to paste mud over its body. When we were taking the picture, we felt the elephants very adorable," said Tong Lei, a group leader of the elephants searching and monitor team.
The herd of wild elephants crossed the Yuanjiang River on Sunday, under the direction by artificial means, about 25 kilometers away from Mojiang County.
