2:11Now PlayingGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday called the latest developments in Afghanistan "bitter" and admitted that the efforts by foreign powers to change the country "did not work as planned."
She also said Germany would coordinate with other countries for evacuating people from Afghanistan, and mentioned that after speaking with French President Emmanuel Macron there would be "a very close German-French cooperation."
Merkel went on to admit that Germany always realized it could not operate independently within the country and along with other NATO forces was fundamentally dependant on the decisions of the US government.
The soon to depart German Chancellor understood the bitterness that will be felt by many Afghans who have helped the western nations in previous years and stressed that Germany, alongside other countries, "have to learn our lessons, and set ourselves smaller goals on those missions."
