Now members of that community say they're experiencing heartbreak, anger and frustration as they watch the Taliban take over their ancestral homeland.
Hayward city councilwoman and Mayor Pro Tempore Aisha Wahab is the 1st Afghan American Woman Elected to Public Office in the United States.
She says the community is working to try to help loved ones still in Afghanistan get out. She says she's especially concerned with the women in the country due to the Taliban's treatment of females.
Author and educator Mizgon Zahir Darby has written in numerous publications about her Afghan homeland over the past 20 years and is now an instructor at Mills College in Oakland, CA.
She says she has several relatives still living in Kabul. Some she has heard from and are safe. But she does not know the whereabouts of others.
Zahir Darby says seeing the Taliban flag flying over the Afghan capitol left her with a feeling of homelessness and not belonging anywhere.
Mohamad Hashem works in his family's grocery store selling staples like Afghan pastries and spices to give the local community a taste of home.
He says he's not political and is unsure who to blame for Afghanistan's current turmoil. He says he only hope that people from his homeland stay safe.
