1:06Now PlayingA spokeswoman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR, on Tuesday expressed concern about "human rights violations" following the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan.
Shabia Mantoo expressed particular concern about the future of women and girls in Afghanistan, as well as "those perceived to have a current or past association with the Afghan government, international organizations or with international military forces".
UNICEF's chief of field operations & emergency Mustapha Ben Messaoud said child causalities in Afghanistan in the first half of 2021 constituted the highest number of children "killed and maimed for this period ever recorded by the U.N."
Additionally, he said the U.N. predicts that one out of every two children in Afghanistan "will be severely malnourished" in 2021.
On the COVID-19 situation in Afghanistan, World Health Organization spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said the disruption at Kabul's main airport on Monday, when thousands of Afghans tried to flee Taliban rule, delayed the arrival of "urgently needed" medical supplies.
Jasarevic added that overcrowding at "health facilities and IDP camps due to rising conflict" in Afghanistan would increase the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
