1:02Now PlayingGirls in Herat have gone back to school under Taliban rule to take their midterm exams, after the militant organisation announced that they can continue their education as long as they wear the hijab head covering.
Days after taking over the country following a lightning offensive, the Taliban made an effort to portray a more moderate stance, promising to respect women's rights and inviting them to join the government.
The Taliban seized power in Afghanistan two weeks before the U.S. was set to complete its troop withdrawal after a costly two-decade war.
The insurgents stormed across the country, capturing all major cities in a matter of days, as Afghan security forces trained and equipped by the U.S. and its allies melted away.
They so far have offered no specifics on how they will lead, other than to say they will be guided by Shariah, or Islamic, law.
The fundamentalist group ruled the country for five years until the 2001 U.S.-led invasion.
During that time, it forbade girls an education and women the right to work, and refused even to let them travel outside their homes without a male relative to accompany them.
Older generations remember the Taliban's previous rule, when they largely confined women to their homes, banned television and music, and held public executions.
