UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told reporters in New York the world body will support efforts to restore peace and stability while promoting the rights and dignity of all Afghans.
He urged the international community to present a united front against the Taliban following their takeover of Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, chaos persisted outside Kabul's international airport on Thursday as thousands tried to flee Taliban rule.
Guterres said the UN does not have the capacity to run an airport when asked if the UN will takeover operations.
"I think it is not realistic," the UN diplomat said.
The Taliban now maintain an armed presence outside the airport, while the U.S. and British military are inside.
Up to 15,000 Americans remain in Afghanistan after the Taliban took full control of the nation.
The Biden administration has received criticism for the scenes of violence and disorder in recent days as thousands attempted to flee while the Taliban advanced.
