2:05Now PlayingTropical Storm Henri is strengthening and forecast to grow into a hurricane within hours on a course for the U.S. Northeast, where it is expected to inundate coastal areas with flooding rains and thrashing winds.
Henri’s top winds increased to 70 miles (113 kilometers) per hour in the Atlantic, just 4 mph shy of hurricane status, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in a 2 p.m. advisory. Hurricane watches have been posted from Long Island to Cape Cod, and in areas further from Henri’s center, tropical storm watches stretch from Fire Island to East Rockaway Inlet in New York and along the Connecticut coast west of New Haven.
Henri’s ultimate destination remains uncertain but if it strikes New England, it’ll be the region’s first direct hit by a hurricane since Bob in 1991. Although New York City is west of Henri’s forecast track, tropical-storm strength winds could whip through the five boroughs starting late Saturday and linger through the day on Sunday, the National Weather Service said.
