Aug 24, 20211:25Now PlayingMore than 20 people have been killed and dozens were injured in shootings and stampedes amid chaos near the Kabul international airport, as many Afghans have kept swarming the area in hoping to board an evacuation flight.
Since the Afghan Taliban entered the capital city of Kabul on Aug. 15, tens of thousands of Afghans trying to flee the country have flocked around the airport.
U.S. soldiers, Taliban fighters and Afghan security force members have made great efforts to maintain the order at entrances of the airport for more than a week.
Most of the Afghans gathering outside the airport are not holding passports or identity documents, but they are still trying to leave Afghanistan. Meanwhile, others with valid legal documents often fail to enter the airport because of the chaos.
The security situation in Afghanistan remains complicated. Taliban fighters and foreign troops deployed at the airport would fire warning shots to deter the people from time to time.
"Most of the people who have come to the airport are not holding valid legal documents, and they are crowding around here. It's not certain that who has the documents and who doesn't," said one of the Afghans at the airport.
But others told a different story.
"They (foreign troops) don't give any information, but just fire warning shots and use tear gas. We've come here with valid legal documents, but they still beat us and drive us out of the airport," said another Afghan.
