1:46Now PlayingThe U.S. installation commander at Al Udeid air base in Qatar said on Saturday that they had been able to move most of the 57,000 Afghan evacuees who were brought from Afghanistan to Qatar.
Brigadier General Gerald Donohue said in a news conference that about two-thirds of the Afghan evacuees were sent to processing points in Europe, while one-third was taken directly to the United States.
He said about 1,400 evacuees remained in Qatar, some expecting to leave soon and others who were in need of medical care who would stay until they were able to travel, as they await resettlement elsewhere. Nine Afghan women have delivered babies since their arrival in Qatar.
General Donohue added that they didn't have the facilities to hold thousands of people who came to Al Udeid air base, although they used warehouses and hangars as shelters and also built facilities to be able to host the huge numbers of evacuees.
Qatar played a big role in U.S. efforts to evacuate tens of thousands of people from Afghanistan. Now the tiny Gulf Arab state is being asked to help shape what is next for Afghanistan because of its ties with both Washington and the Taliban, who are in charge in Kabul.
