2:05Now PlayingAfter pummeling China with tariffs, sanctions and restrictions on high-tech exports, the U.S. now wants something from Beijing. Xi Jinping isn’t giving in so easily.
President Joe Biden spoke with his Chinese counterpart for 90 minutes last night, urging him to make a distinction between issues for cooperation like climate change and those for competition like human rights and trade.
Xi said China was willing to seek progress “on the basis of respecting each other’s core interests” — effectively linking climate and the pandemic with sensitive matters like Hong Kong, Taiwan and Xinjiang.
The call came after U.S. climate envoy John Kerry struggled to gain new commitments from China ahead of the COP26 summit in Scotland starting in late October.
