YouTube Description
as posted by the channelThe head of the World Health Organization is warning of a surge in cases of measles and diarrhea in Afghanistan and the risks of child malnutrition and a resurgence of polio.
Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the comments to reporters Thursday after his recent visit to Afghanistan and Lebanon.
He decried years of political and financial crisis in Lebanon and the lingering struggles to re-emerge from the effects of a massive, deadly explosion in Beirut last year.
He cited a "serious shortage of supplies, medical equipment, fuel and electricity" and said 2,000 doctors and 1,500 nurses have left the country.
As for Afghanistan, Tedros said the country faces "an imminent humanitarian catastrophe" amid a "brain drain" as healthcare workers flee the country after Taliban fighters ousted the Afghan government last month. He recounted how his heart broke after hearing accounts from nurses who hadn't been paid for three months.
Tedros said he believed engaging the Taliban leadership is essential if the WHO is to support the people of Afghanistan.
He said 2.1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine remain unused in Afghanistan.
