1:03Now PlayingA 100-day countdown to the start of the Beijing Winter Olympics began on Tuesday amid threats of overseas boycotts and coronavirus fears.
Visitors to Beijing's central shopping street gathered in front of the clock and cheered when it hit 100 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds.
The celebratory moment came as China attempts to curb recent coronavirus outbreaks.
Over 100 new cases have been reported in northwestern Inner Mongolia, Gansu and other provinces across the country, leading to travel restrictions and community lockdowns.
Olympic athletes and support staff arriving for the games are required to either be vaccinated or to undergo a three-week quarantine under strict controls, according to the International Olympic Committee.
Only spectators from within China are allowed to buy tickets to attend the games.
Human rights groups have called for protests against the games over China's oppression of political dissidents and minority ethnic groups in Tibet, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong.
Last week protestors disrupted a flame lighting ceremony in southern Greece.
Beijing will become the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics, with several venues built for the 2008 games being repurposed for next year's event.
