U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Monday warned world leaders at the COP26 climate conference that a failure to tackle climate change "is a death sentence".
Guterres made the remarks in his opening at the ceremonial opening of the two-week talks, saying that recent announcements by governments that they could turn the tide on climate change were “an illusion,” not least because there are serious questions regarding many countries’ pledges.
In his speech he made reference to "melting glaciers to relentless extreme weather events", while pointing out that nations had been "burning and drilling and mining our way deeper".
"We are digging our own graves", he said.
Guterres urged major economic powers, including emerging nations like China, to act faster as they contribute the lion’s share of global greenhouse gas emissions.
He also criticized confusion over emissions reductions targets, and announced the creation of a new group of experts to propose standards for measuring commitments from businesses and other non-state actors.
