The sale is the highest fee ever paid for a painting by a Latin American artist and more than triples the record for any Kahlo piece.
The last "bust" self-portrait completed by Kahlo before her death in 1954, was purchased for $34.9 million by the Eduardo F. Costantini Collection, a renowned collector committed to supporting Latin American art and Malba's founder, the Museum of Latin American Art in Buenos Aires, Sotheby's confirmed to The Associated Press shortly after Tuesday's sale.
The overall price included $3.9 million in fees, Sotheby's said.
"Diego y yo" - Diego and I - appeared on the market for the first time in more than 30 years.
The seller was anonymous and the work was not in Mexico, Sotheby's told AP in September.
The painting, just 30 by 22.4 centimetres (11⅝ by 8¾ inches), symbolizes the stormy relationship between Kahlo and Rivera, who were married for nearly 25 years in a passionate and turbulent marriage.
