With mask requirements and fewer stalls spread across a wider areas, Frankfurt and Berlin wants to make strolling around the market as safe as possible at this stage of the pandemic.
Masks may be removed for a short time when eating bratwurst, or drinking mulled wine.
Only visitors who have had Covid-19 or have been fully vaccinated against are allowed into two specific areas.
The city will also forego an official opening as well as the large customary stage with a music program in front of the city hall.
