1:13Now PlayingFirefighters are battling intense wildfires in Argentina's northern Patagonia, which on Monday threatened to advance towards the Valdes Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and popular tourist area.
The blaze is located on the outskirts of the city of Puerto Madryn, near Carlos Ameghino Isthmus, the natural gateway entrance into the UNESCO site at Valdes Peninsula.
Firefighting units from throughout the province of Chubut joined forces to contain the flames and keep them away from the peninsula, the main tourist destination for thousands who come from all over the world to see southern right whales first-hand.
Firetrucks and firefighters spoke to the local sheep farmers requesting that they build controlled fire rings around their homes and farmyards.
At nightfall, residents continued to try to contain the flames, shoveling dirt on them to prevent them from reaching their animals and pastures.
The Valdes Peninsula is home to a large breeding population of the endangered southern right whale as well as breeding populations of southern elephant seals and southern sea lions.
