On the eve of Jan. 6th's first anniversary, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi insisted that American democracy won after a violent insurrection was launched against lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
Reflecting on the state of democracy 12 months after thousands of violent pro-Trump rioters overwhelmed the U.S. Capitol, Pelosi told the Associated Press on Wednesday "democracy won that night."
"They were deterred in their action to stop the peaceful transfer of power," Pelosi said. "They lost. It was a failure for them."
An optimistic Pelosi insisted, "it was a victory for democracy as we returned to the Capitol that night to again ratify the peaceful transfer of power."
Not referring to former President Donald Trump by name during the interview, Pelosi was blunt in her criticisms of him. "Let's hope that we never elect a president who will incite an insurrection on the Congress of the United States," she said,
As for Trump's supporters, Pelosi said "they believed a lie that the president told them."
Trump has continued to lie about his 2020 election loss. He frequently — and falsely — says the "real" insurrection was on Nov. 3, the day of the 2020 election that Democrat Joe Biden carried in a 306-232 Electoral College victory and a 7 million popular vote margin.
"It was a big lie on his part, and for that, he should be ashamed," Pelosi said. "For that, he was impeached twice."
