1:32Now PlayingNicaragua's President Daniel Ortega was sworn in for a fourth consecutive term Monday, following elections considered rigged and on a day marked by sanctions from the United States and the European Union against members of his government.
Alongside him was first lady Rosario Murillo, sworn in for her second term as his vice president.
In his inauguration speech, Ortega called for the lifting of sanctions against Venezuela and Cuba.
He hit out at the United States, describing those jailed over the storming of the US Capitol building in Washington a year ago as "political prisoners".
Both President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela and President Miguel Díaz-Canel of Cuba attended the event.
"We are going to continue fighting to defend the people, so they have health care, education and housing," Ortega told flag-waving crowds in the capital's Revolution Plaza.
Earlier Monday, the U.S. Treasury Department slapped sanctions on more Nicaraguan officials.
The State Department is also imposing visa restrictions on 116 individuals linked to the Ortega regime.
November's election was broadly criticised as a farce, after seven likely challengers to Ortega were arrested and jailed in the months prior to the vote.
