1:28Now PlayingAlmaty residents said they are desperate to find their relatives detained during massive protests in Kazakhstan's largest city last week.
Relatives and lawyers queued outside the Internal Affairs department Wednesday where some of the protesters are believed to be held.
A checkpoint has been set up on the street outside the department, and human rights activist Galym Ageleuov said access to the detainees by relatives and lawyers has been blocked by Kazakh troops.
Another man, who gave his name only as Renat, said a close friend of his had been detained on January 4.
"Since January 6 we've been here (outside Internal Affairs department) and we don't know whether he's alive or not," he said.
Kazakh authorities said Wednesday they detained 1,678 more people in the past 24 hours over their alleged participation in the violent unrest that rocked the former Soviet nation last week, the worst since Kazakhstan gained independence three decades ago.
The additional detentions, reported by authorities in Almaty, that was hit the hardest by the turmoil, brought the total number of arrests to about 12,000.
More than 300 criminal investigations into mass unrest and assaults on law enforcement officers have been opened.
Protests over soaring fuel prices erupted in the oil- and gas-rich Central Asian nation of 19 million on January 2 and quickly spread across the country, with political slogans reflecting wider discontent over the country's authoritarian government.
