1:49Now PlayingThe World Health Organization's director-general expressed concern for health services on Tuesday as he warned the omicron variant of the coronavirus “continues to sweep the world”.
Speaking during a briefing in Geneva, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said there were 18 million new COVID-19 cases reported last week.
"The number of deaths remains stable for the moment," he said.
"But we are concerned about the impact omicron is having on already exhausted health workers and overburdened health systems," he added
Tedros said although it appeared in some countries that the peak of the ormicon wave had passed he warned "no country is out of the woods yet".
He expressed concerns about those who were still not vaccinated around the globe and called for greater vaccine distribution.
"I'm concerned that unless that we change the current model, we will enter a second and even more destructive phase of vaccine inequity," he said.
His comments follow those of the head of emergencies at the World Health Organization, Dr. Michael Ryan, who said on Tuesday that the worst of the coronavirus pandemic could be over this year if huge inequities in vaccinations and medicines are addressed quickly.
