Ukrainians in the Luhansk region took refuge in bomb shelters Tuesday to avoid sporadic shelling near the line of contact separating Russia-backed separatists and government forces.
One resident of Shchastia claimed that since Russia recognised parts of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions controlled by separatists, shelling had increased from both sides.
"This is what de-escalation looks like," he added.
After shelling hit the roof of several residential buildings, some of the residents moved to a basement of a five-storey building where they have been staying for two days.
Another local said his wife hoped to get back to their house tonight, but he doubted the shelling would stop.
"We are very tired, but we can do nothing about it. You can't run from war," he said.
The couple decided to move to a safer place in the basement fearing the house wouldn't sustain shelling.
Sporadic shelling was heard near Luhansk Power Station in the government-controlled area.
Smoke could be seen rising over the power station.
The Ukrainian Interior Ministry said in a statement that the power station's transformer was hit by shelling from the rebel-controlled side.
