1:52Now PlayingA group of friends with no combat experience stood in a scrap yard on the outskirts of Lviv on Thursday learning military skills to defend their country from invading Russian forces.
Their instructor Roman is a former Ukrainian soldier injured in combat in one of Ukraine's previous periods of conflict, and is therefore unable to join the frontline of this war. "I already fought in the east of Ukraine as a volunteer," Roman said, unwilling to give his surname.
He demonstrates how to load and handle the weapons and how to move during firefights. "Because of my health condition, I made a decision for myself that it is necessary to teach as many people as possible, not to kill but how to survive in the best way possible in the fight," Roman continued.
One of those listening is 46-year-old Andrii, who explained he wanted to be prepared. "I came here to have some understanding of what to do, how defend myself, how to survive if the enemy comes."
"I consider it very necessary for everyone as we can see what's going on. The enemy doesn't pity us, the enemy is simply destroying us," Andrii added.
