1:21Now PlayingUkrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday called on the European Union to help Ukraine with sanctions against Russia.
Speaking at a news briefing with European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell in Kyiv, Zelenskyy said Russia "doesn't want to hear anything and anyone" which is why he felt greater sanctions were needed.
Von der Leyen also spoke about the missile strike on a train station in the Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk.
The missile hit a station where thousands of Ukrainians had gathered Friday, mostly women and children trying to flee a new, looming Russian offensive, Ukrainian authorities said.
"There are almost no words for it," she said. "The cynical behaviour (by Russia) has almost no benchmark anymore."
Von der Leyen and Borrell were on a trip to Kyiv as part of efforts to signal the EU's support for Ukraine.
After meeting Zelenskyy on Friday, Von der Leyen provided the Ukrainian president with a questionnaire which was the first step in the country applying for European Union membership.
"It will not be as usual a matter of years to form this opinion, but I think a matter of weeks if we work closely together," Von der Leyen said.
