Austria’s Chancellor Karl Nehammer said he’ll meet President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday in an effort to persuade him to end a war that’s exacting a mounting civilian toll. Ukraine expects Russia to widen its offensive in the east this week, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said, while a new commander for the Russian troops who led the country’s operations in Syria is raising alarm among U.S. officials.
Putin’s invasion will likely cause Ukraine’s economy to shrink by almost half and Russia’s to contract by about 11% this year, the World Bank said. Ukraine is pushing its allies to seize and sell Russian assets to help it pay for the rebuilding while several EU countries are calling for the energy-hungry bloc to extend sanctions to Russian oil.
