2:02Now PlayingEnvironmental activists in Mexico, Colombia and Argentina held demonstrations on Earth Day, April 22 to call for justice for land defenders and suspension on fracking.
In Mexico, demonstrators gathered in Mexico City's central Zocalo square where they called for justice for environmental campaigners and land defenders who had disappeared or been killed.
In front of the National Palace, candles were lit and flowers were laid on photos of those who were missing or who had died speaking up about environmental issues in the country.
In Colombia, dozens of environmental demonstrators gathered in Bogota, protesting against oiling fracking operations planned in Colombia.
The protest also marked the International Mother Earth Day.
Demonstrators also celebrated a recent ruling by a Colombian court that temporarily suspended fracking projects in Northern Colombia.
Carlos Andrés Santiago, spokesperson for Colombia Free of Fracking Association, said they are pushing to end this practice in Colombia as there is evidence of the multiple environmental damage caused by it.
The first three fracking wells in Colombia received permits to operate in Colombia earlier in April.
In Argentina, environmental groups took to the streets of Buenos Aires , claiming for public policies to help reduce the impact of climate change.
The thousands of demonstrators, most of them young people, advanced toward the National Congress.
Among their demands were the elimination of the fracking oil exploitation system, which they say threatens water sources.
The protesters also called for legislation to protect wetlands, which are constantly endangered by fires and illegal cattle ranching.
Argentina has one of the largest wetland systems around the Paraná river.
