0:38Now PlayingPresident Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday new, alternative sporting tournaments must be created in Russia in place of the competitions cancelled as a response to the military operation in Ukraine.
"And we can get it done fast," Putin said, "open and all-around attractive multiple-step athletic tournaments. Make sure international athletes, clubs, teams take part."
Russia was removed Tuesday as host of the 2023 world championship in men’s ice hockey that was to be played in Putin’s home city St. Petersburg.
It follows one day after Russia's signature annual international figure skating competition was pulled by the International Skating Union.
