Chanthaburi, where MonThong, a famous variety of Thai durians, is always the first to pick the fruits in the country, and the Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives held a special ceremony there on Monday for durian picking.
With Thai Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Chalermchai Sreeon hosting the ceremony, people picked MonThong durians to start the durian season of this year.
More than 80% of Thai durians are exported to mainland China and Hong Kong each year.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand has been taking strict anti-epidemic measures to guarantee that the quality of durians exported to China are up to the Chinese standard against the Covid-19.
He said, "'If there is no contamination, there is no Covid. Our Covid measures start from inside the orchards.''
The minister said the opening of China-Laos Railway has shortened the transportation time of Thai durians to China.
Thailand for the first time transported durians by China-Laos Railway on Sunday, with the first batch of durians weighing 500 tons in 27 containers.
