Many people have complained about the high prices of clothes or the desserts that are traditionally bought a day or two before the holiday. A recurring scene at the market was that of children pointing to desserts or clothes they want to buy only to have their parents pull them away after learning the price.
In Tripoli, Lebanon's poorest city, residents say there is a constant stream of migrant boats, taking off from shores around the city — even from Tripoli's official port.
"If it wasn't for the hunger and poverty they were facing, they wouldn't have immigrated through the sea," said Tripoli resident Nisreen Chehade.
Chehade is a cook at Atayeb Kitchen, an organization that hires women in need from Tripoli, where workers are currently making traditional Eid cookies called maamoul.
Another maamoul baker, Roqaya Issa, was preparing the traditional holiday cookies at Atyab Kitchen. But she will not be able to make Eid cookies for her children at home because of the rising cost of living.
"You're working hard but your children are being denied many things," she lamented.
Lebanon, a small Mediterranean nation of 6 million people, including 1 million Syrian refugees, is in the grip of the worst economic crisis in the country's modern history.
The World Bank describes the crisis as among the worst in the world since the 1850s. Tens of thousands of people have lost their jobs and the Lebanese pound has lost more than 90% of its value.
