Belarus' authoritarian leader told The Associated Press the use of nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine would be"unacceptable".

President Alexander Lukashenko said he did know whether Moscow was "capable" of deploying its nuclear arsenal, and directed the question towards the Kremlin.

During the sit-down interview, Lukashenko said Russian leader Vladimir Putin does not want for the conflict to escalate into a "global confrontation" with NATO, and urged the West to ensure one doesn't happen.

The Belarusian also said he does not believe Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "runs" the country, but was rather at the behest of the United States.

"Don't let him get offended, that's my point of view. Probably, I'm wrong," he added.

Lukashenko also said he believes if the U.S. President Joe Biden pushed for an end to the war, "everything will stop within a week".

Russia deployed forces to Belarusian territory under the pretext of military drills and then sent them rolling into Ukraine as part of the invasion that began on February 24.

Lukashenko publicly supported the operation, alleging at a meeting with Putin in early March that Ukraine planned to attack Belarus and that Moscow's offensive prevented that.
