World War II veteran Ivan Lisun expressed his despair as he took stock of his destroyed house which he said his father built in 1930.
More than 700 houses have been destroyed during the course of the fighting in Zolochiv alone.
Twenty-two people have died and more than 60 have been injured, according to Viktor Kovalenko, head of the Zolochiv community.
Lisun, who was conscripted into the army one month after he turned 18, said he liberated cities and villages in Belarus and Poland during the second World War.
But now, wearing a suit decorated with war medals, he asks himself: "What were we liberating? To have this kind of elderly life?"
Lisun's daughter, Natalya Koruzha, said that the minutes she was searching for her dad in the aftermath of the shelling were the scariest of her life.
"He was standing looking around and could not understand what was going on. And then I said, 'dad there was a strike against us'," Koruzha said.
Zolochiv is located 20 kilometres from the Russian border.
Strikes against Zolochiv continue every day, Kovalenko says.
