YouTube Description
as posted by the channelDemocratic lawmakers gathered on the steps of the Capitol to voice their opposition to the anticipated Supreme Court ruling on abortion.
They framed Republican support for rolling back abortion rights as an attack on a woman's access to health care and as a precursor for more restrictions in the future, including the banning of contraception and same-sex marriage.
"Make no mistake, once Republicans shred long-standing precedent and privacy rights, they intend to wage an all-out assault on more of our rights," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., who had an abortion at age 16 at what she has described as a back-alley clinic in Mexico, said she knows the stigma and despair of being denied care and called on colleagues and the public to participate in rallies held to express opposition to the potential decision striking down Roe v Wade.
"I know what it's like to have your medical decisions criminalized, to be forced to travel for the care that you need and to see your future hang on the decisions of politicians rather than doctors," Lee said.
Lawmakers who spoke also directed their attention to voters in November, calling on supporters of abortion rights to keep the House and Senate in Democratic control.
Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., call this the beginning of "the march toward the November elections."
