Ukraine said 53 severely wounded fighters and more than 200 other soldiers were allowed to evacuate the Azovstal steel plant in the port city of Mariupol. They will be held in Russian-occupied territory and may be part of a future exchange of prisoners, according to a senior Ukrainian defense official.

Several buses accompanied by Russian military vehicles were seen pulling away from the Azovstal steel mill in Mariupol after nightfall on Monday.

It was unclear who was on board, but the Russian Defense Ministry had announced an agreement for the wounded to leave the steelworks for treatment in a town held by pro-Moscow separatists.

Scores of wounded Ukrainian troops were trapped in the bombed remains of the giant steel plant, the last stronghold of resistance in Mariupol.
