YouTube Description
as posted by the channelNew Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she spoke with President Joe Biden about the mass shooting in Uvalde, but unlike reforms made in her country she recognizes "our political system is very different."
In the aftermath of the mass shooting in Christchurch, Ardern says "the New Zealand public had an expectation that if we knew what the problem was, that we do something about it."
Ardern spoke to the media on the White House driveway Tuesday after meeting with Biden.
"We had the ability with actually the near animous support of parliamentarians to place a ban on semi automatic military style weapons and assault rifles and so we did that. But the New Zealand public set the expectations first and foremost."
This comes after an 18-year-old gunman killed 19 elementary school students and two teachers with an AR-15-style rifle last week in Texas.
Ardern said she and Biden also spoke about the war in Ukraine and the U.S. economic plan for the Indo-Pacific.
"Many people would assume that New Zealand being at the bottom of the world may not take such a significant interest in the conflict there," said Ardern.
"We do as a nation that is absolutely focused on the rules and norms being upheld and of the territorial sovereignty of a nation being preserved. We absolutely have a strong interest in what is happening to the people of Ukraine."
