A divided US Supreme Court struck down a New York law that limited who could carry a handgun in public, issuing a landmark ruling that could mean more guns on the streets of big cities even as officials vowed to try limit the impact.

The 6-3 ruling marks the first time the court has said the Second Amendment protects gun rights outside the home. New York was one of at least six states -- along with California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland and Hawaii -- with laws that prevented most people from legally carrying a handgun.

“We know of no other constitutional right that an individual may exercise only after demonstrating to government officers some special need,” Justice Clarence Thomas wrote for the court. The three liberal justices dissented.
