0:18Now PlayingThe suspect in the deadly mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade outside of Chicago was charged with seven counts of first-degree murder, with “dozens” more charges expected, according to the local state’s attorney.
Robert “Bobby” Crimo III, the 21-year-old suspect, would face a life sentence on the initial charges alone if convicted, Lake County state’s attorney Eric Rinehart said at a briefing Tuesday. He is asking for Crimo to be held without bail after the Highland Park, Illinois, shooting, which left at least seven dead and more than 30 injured.
Local officials said on Tuesday that Crimo had likely planned the attack for weeks, using a “high-powered rifle” to fire more than 70 rounds into the crowd of Independence Day revelers. He wore women’s clothing to carry out the attack in order to conceal his identity and escape authorities, said Chris Covelli, a spokesperson for the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.
