0:36Now PlayingA powerful thunderstorm swept over New York City Monday afternoon, swamping highways, flooding train lines and casting the evening commute into sodden disarray.
A flash-flood warning was in effect for Manhattan, The Bronx and the surrounding region until 6 p.m. local time, according to the National Weather Service. Officials warned residents to avoid travel and stay out of basements, a grim reminder of when the aftermath of Hurricane Ida inundated the region in 2021, killing dozens of people.
The rain came in forceful bands that were swift, blinding and punctuated by wall-rattling thunderclaps. Doppler radar indicated that 1.5 to 3 inches (3.8 to 7.6 centimeters) fell across the area, turning streets and gutters into rushing brooks.
As evening fell and rain ebbed, forecasters warned brutal winds could tear through the region, with gusts hitting 55 miles (88 kilometers) per hour in Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island.
Some of the worst flooding appeared to be in New Jersey. The Saddle River in Lodi rose 3 feet in a matter of hours. Ho-Ho-Kus Brook, a tributary of the Saddle River, rose by more than a foot, according to the Weather Service. Water rescues were underway in parts of northeast part of the state, the weather service said.
