1:02Now PlayingAs Ukraine braced for what President Volodymr Zelenskyy warned could be especially brutal Russian attacks Wednesday as the country observed its Independence Day — the United Nations Security Council met to discuss the war that for 6 months has captured the world's attention.
"Today marks six months of Russia's premeditated, unjustifiable and brutal full scale war against Ukraine. Just six months since we sitting here in the council chamber, watched as Russia, serving in the presidency, attempted to defend the indefensible," said Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya defended his country's actions in the Security Council.
"This war, which claimed the lives of civilians for eight years, could have ended if Kiev had fulfilled the Minsk agreements," said Nebenzya.
Wednesday also marks Ukranian Independence Day. Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union 1991.
Kyiv authorities banned large gatherings in the capital through Thursday, fearing the national holiday might bring particularly heavy Russian missile strikes.
