"This is a heavy loss for Europe and the whole world," said the Ukrainian leader, sending his thoughts and prayers.
Zelenskyy also said that he once again "raised the issue of official recognition of Russia as a terrorist state" when he met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Earlier in the day, Zelenskyy posted a video of Ukrainian fighters reporting to have captured the city of Balakliya in the Kharkiv region.
In his address to the nation, Zelenskky said that "since the 1st of September, more than 1,000 square kilometres of our territory have been liberated."
