as posted by the channelJohn Fetterman’s debate performance against Mehmet Oz on Tuesday will likely keep his recovery from a May stroke front-and-center in the closing days of the US Senate race for a Pennsylvania seat that will determine control of Congress’s upper chamber.
But it was his lack of policy specifics as much as his staccato speech that characterized the Democrat’s uneven showing against the Republican Oz. He spoke in disjointed tones, sometimes slurring and transposing words. But he also struggled to articulate his positions or rebut Oz’s characterizations of his policies as too extreme.
Oz, backed by former President Donald Trump, has been surging in recent weeks, drawing the race to a statistical tie from a double-digit polling deficit as recently as August. His late resurgence dovetails with signs of Republican momentum nationally in the closing stretch of the Nov. 8 midterm elections as concerns about inflation and crime overwhelm voter angst over the US Supreme Court’s rollback of federal abortion rights.
While all eyes were on Fetterman, Oz also struggled at times, as when he tried to differentiate himself from other Republicans on abortion, an issue that has galvanized many Democrats. While saying he supports exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother, Oz said he opposed a nationwide abortion law, saying the issue should be between “a woman, her doctor, and local political leaders.”
Fetterman’s campaign said in a release it plans to release an ad targeting suburban women with a clip of Oz’s answer to highlight his “radical out-of-touch comments on abortion at Tuesday’s debate.”
