1:42Now PlayingRussian President Vladimir Putin said conflict with Ukraine "was inevitable" and suggested Poland has ambitions to annex parts of the country.
The Russian leader was speaking at a meeting with historians and religious figures as part of celebrations marking Unity Day.
"If we had not taken appropriate actions in February, everything would have been the same, only from a worse position for us. The situation in Ukraine was brought by her so-called friends to the point where it became deadly for Russia and suicidal for the Ukrainian people themselves," Putin said.
He added that Russia has always been treating Ukrainians "with respect and warmth" and continues to do so.
"It is also difficult and bitter that it is one people that is fighting on the both sides, the confrontation is within one people," the Russian President said.
He claimed that Poland is still cherishing the idea of annexing Ukrainian territories.
"We also know about the ideas of some part of the political circles in Poland to create a great state from sea to sea. There was a lot of talk about this before World War II," Putin said.
"Now we see the hugs of the leaders of Poland and Ukraine, but the idea is still alive. The idea of absorbing Ukraine has not gone away."
He stressed that Russia could be the only real genuine guarantor of Ukrainian statehood and sovereignty.
"Russia also gave Ukraine its historical territories, but voluntarily in order to create a single common cultural and humanitarian historical space. And those territories that I just mentioned above, they were forcibly torn away from Hungary, Romania and Poland. These are completely different situations," he said.
