0:18Now PlayingTropical Storm Nicole rammed into the Bahamas Wednesday as it churns across the Atlantic Ocean toward Florida where evacuations are already under way amid the threat of powerful winds and a dangerous storm surge.
The storm made landfall on Great Abaco Island in the north Bahamas shortly before noon local time, with winds of 70 miles (133 kilometers) per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center. Nicole is expected to strengthen into a Category 1 as is continues over the Atlantic toward Florida.
“Winds are the main concern with Nicole, but we also expect to see heavy rains,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said during a briefing Wednesday.
The storm was about 185 miles east of West Palm Beach and is expected to come ashore early Thursday, making landfall north of Palm Beach. Palm Beach is home to former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
