Water pressure in the city’s distribution network fell below levels required to ensure supplies are safe to drink after severe storms cut power to three water-treatment plants, according to municipal leaders.
The water won’t be considered safe to drink until Monday night or early Tuesday, Mayor Sylvester Turner told local media.
High-rise office towers in the fourth-largest US city told tenants that fire-suppression and air-conditioning systems wouldn’t be impacted by the boil order issued late Sunday evening.
More than 12,000 customers were blacked out at the height of the storm, but by Monday morning all but about 100 had been restored, utility CenterPoint Energy Inc. said. The water outages spread beyond Houston’s city limits, prompting school closures in suburban districts that rely on municipal supplies.
