as posted by the channelUkraine's Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said on Thursday that heavy fighting is taking place in the eastern city of Soledar.
"The enemy continues the assaults, but suffers significant losses and is not successful,” Malar said at a news briefing in Kyiv.
Soledar's fall, while unlikely a turning point in the nearly 11-month war, would be a prize for a Kremlin starved of good battlefield news in recent months.
It would also offer Russian troops a springboard to conquer other areas of Donetsk province that remain under Ukrainian control, such as the nearby strategic city of Bakhmut.
"Today, the city's approaches are literally littered with the bodies of Putin's destroyed troops. Nevertheless, they move over the bodies of their fallen fighters," Maliar added.
Senior military commander Oleksii Hromov described the latest shake-up in the Russian military as a sign of poor performance.
"Not everything works out for them as they wish," Hromov said.
In an apparent recognition of battlefield setbacks, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced the replacement of the head of Russian forces in Ukraine.
The former chief was demoted to deputy after three months on the job, signaling that Russian President Vladimir Putin wasn’t fully satisfied with his performance.
