0:38Now PlayingUnited States Navy sailors recovered the remnants of a Chinese surveillance balloon from the waters off the coast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Sunday, February 5, a day after the Pentagon said the balloon was shot down by a fighter jet.
The balloon was six miles off the coast of South Carolina when it was shot down by an F-22 Raptor dispatched from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia on Saturday, according to the Department of Defense. Members of the US Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 2 recovered the debris on Sunday.
After the balloon was downed, North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue, North Myrtle Beach Police, and the Horry County Police Department said federal authorities carried out the operation off the coast of Horry County and warned of the possibility of debris in local waters.
“Members of the US Military are coordinating to collect debris from the ocean; however, it is possible fragments may make it to the coastline,” the fire service said.
