The downing of three unidentified objects over the US and Canada has stoked speculation that they could be related to aliens or other extraterrestrial life forms, but the White House said Monday it has no information that is the case.
“I know there’s been questions and concerns about this, but there is no, again, no indication of aliens or extra terrestrial activity with these recent takedowns,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during her daily briefing.
The remark drew chuckles from some reporters in the room. But just one day earlier, a US general refused to rule out the possibility of alien activity.
“I’ll let the intel community and the counterintelligence community figure that out,” General Glen VanHerck, commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, said Sunday in response to a question about alien origins. “I haven’t ruled out anything at this point.”
The general’s comments, made around the same time the Super Bowl was beginning, set off rampant social media chatter about whether the government was burying major news about the existence of life on other planets.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said later Monday the origins and nature of the three objects — which were shot down days after the US destroyed a Chinese spy balloon — are still unknown. But he thanked Jean-Pierre for appearing to rule out one mysterious possibility.
“Thanks for clearing that up,” Kirby said. “It makes my job easier.”
