Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas says migrants trying to get into the U.S. will face tougher asylum laws as Title 42 is due to end this week. U.S. officials will begin denying asylum on Thursday to migrants who show up at the Mexico border without first seeking protection in a country they passed through.

It's part of the Biden administration's effort to crack down on illegal border crossings. At the same time, there are plans to create new legal pathways, including 100 regional migration hubs across the Western Hemisphere.

Administration officials say the measures are meant to fundamentally alter how migrants arrive at the U.S. southern border. Coronavirus pandemic-related restrictions known as Title 42 had allowed border officials to quickly return many migrants who crossed. But those restrictions are ending on Thursday.

"Let me be clear the lifting of the Title 42 public health order does not mean our border is open," said Mayorkas.

"In fact, it is the contrary. Our use of our immigration enforcement authorities under Title eight of the United States Code means tougher consequences for people who cross the border illegally. Unlike under Title 42, an individual who is removed under Title eight is subject to at least a five year bar on re-entry into the United States and can face criminal prosecution if they attempt to cross again."
