It’s a more urgent matter for McCarthy, who’s fending off right-wing challenges to his speakership. For Biden, any erosion of progressive enthusiasm could haunt him as he gets his reelection campaign underway.
North Carolina Republican Dan Bishop has already uttered the words “motion to vacate” — the process by which any one member of the House could try to dethrone the speaker.
For now, that’s a remote possibility. It’s notable that only nine other conservatives joined Bishop for the far-right Freedom Caucus’s news conference on Tuesday to rip the deal and McCarthy.
Nobody expected the Freedom Caucus to support it. But there are a lot of other members representing deep-red districts, and their support could depend on how much the conservative media machine whips their constituents into a frenzy against the deal. That could spread the opposition beyond the fringes.
“No matter what happens, there is going to be a reckoning,” Texas Representative Chip Roy said.
