FEMA Director on Hawaii Fire Damage: 'Nothing Can Prepare' You'

After surveying the devastation left by wildfires on Maui, FEMA Director Deanne Criswell on Monday admitted that "nothing can prepare you for what I saw during my time here."

During a virtual briefing from Hawaii, Criswell told reporters in the White House that nothing could prepare the residents of Maui for the "emotional toll," of the fires.

Hawaii's governor has warned that scores more people could be found dead following the wildfires as search crews go street by street through neighborhoods where the flames galloped as fast as a mile a minute across the landscape.

The blazes that consumed most of the historic town of Lahaina, are already the deadliest in the U.S. in more than a century, with a death toll of at least 96.

"As residents continue to mourn the loss of their friends, their loved ones, their neighbors, the loss of their homes and their way of life, we know and let them know that we are mourning with them," Criswell said.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Piere said that there are already more than 300 FEMA employees on the ground.

"FEMA has provided 50,000 meals, 75,000 liters of water, 5,000 cots and 10,000 blankets to the county government for distribution," she said.
